Family Coaching
UBMD Primary Care is very excited to announce the addition of family recovery coaching at our Amherst location. Our recovery coach, Ted Bodensteiner, CRPA, has extensive experience working with families who have a loved one with an addiction. He uses an innovative approach to assist families to better understand addiction, to learn to practice self-care, create healthy boundaries, and how to love and support them without contributing to their substance use disorder.
We believe that families are often the most overlooked factor in the substance use crisis. Ted’s family recovery coaching directly addresses the family’s worries, frustrations, confusion, and hopelessness.
The backbone of this coaching is a person-centered approach, which acknowledges each family unit is unique with their own set of dynamics and culture. The process of coaching that Ted employs is based on a model called “B.A.L.M.” which stands for “Be a Loving Mirror”, which is a program that allows family members to take action and be their loved one’s best chance at recovery. Ted has been using this program for several years, often resulting in families finding successful pathways to their own recovery.
Testimonial
Here are the words from one parent who Ted has been coaching:
“Addiction affects so many families today, including mine, so to have a person with such depth of understanding as Ted has been life changing. I would highly recommend his family coaching support with his valuable insights into practical steps towards self-care while learning healthy boundaries regarding a loved one with an addiction. I was emotionally exhausted when I first started seeing Ted and I immediately found him to be easy to talk to. By taking his gentle suggestions, I began to work on my self-care and began to heal. He has helped me break through my resistance and understand and accept how to cope with a family member with an addiction. He has also guided me to better understand loving ways to engage and support them without contributing to their addiction. Substance use influences so many family members in different ways it is such a shot of hope to know there is something we can do to heal ourselves and help our loved ones. I can’t emphasize enough how working with Ted has been life-changing for me in the most positive of ways.”
